Use Google Plus To Promote Your Band

If you are in a band struggling to connect with your audience, Google has recently unveiled a new promotional tool to help you reach out to fans across the world: Google Plus Hangouts.

What Is It?

Google Plus Hangout is a live video broadcast in which you can invite your fans to view, well, anything. You can set up a conference, a personal chat, or share a multimedia experience.
Access to a broader audience

This is especially exiting for bands because now, musicians have a direct platform to access all of their fans via a live hangout. It is now possible to set up your show in advance, send out an invitation, and broadcast it live on Google Plus. This can help you perform for fans that are not able to attend regular shows, or it may enable you to reach a broader audience and introduce yourself to new fans in real time.

Get Direct Response In Real time

Another feature is real time communication. Google + Hangouts are set up to send instant messages back and forth between the host and the audience, enabling viewers at home to give valuable feedback, or ask questions to the moderator.

Gauge Your Effectiveness

By receiving direct messages, you can potentially find out what aspects of your performance people are responding to, and what’s not connecting with your fans. Be prepared though, not all comments will be positive. You will have to deal with trolls and critics but that’s actually a good thing, because any response can be a good one if you know how to read the essence of their messages.

Remember, even the most talented of us receives criticism. You need only be concerned when there is no response whatsoever. At least a negative remark means you stirred some kind of emotion, and you can always use that to your advantage but if no one is talking about you, even negatively, you are not having any effect at all and you should seriously consider the possibility that for all your enthusiasm, you might not be very good. Chances are if you are really bad, people will tell you, but either way you need a thick skin in this business otherwise you will not go far.

Live Interviews With Fans

Another fantastic aspect is the ability to host live interviews, or chat sessions with your fans. This is a great way to connect directly with those you hope to connect with and show that you care about your fans. They will ask you many questions if thy like you and of course, with a live broadcast, it will get very interesting what a fan asks you about your sex life, or blatantly calls you out for something stupid you did live. Be prepared for the bizarre!

Show You’re Updated With Current Trends

One great benefit of this is that you automatically connect with the Millennials, who are naturally connected to media and technology on social platforms like this. It is an instant connection and really includes you in a social circle and if they respond well, your likelihood of going viral is increased. The positive impact this can have cannot be overstated. If fans are connecting with you, your band will get a boost.

Get A Manager To Do It

It is essential that you have someone in charge of this aspect, preferably, your manager of you have one. If not, get a friend to do it but you need to be able to trust that person to represent you in a way that you will approve of.

Select a tech savvy person either way and remember, this person represents you in a direct way and has control over your public image while you’re performing. In other words, if they see a negative post and simply replies with slander, it will hurt your overall image. They need to be able to manage negative as well as positive feedback. That is ultimately what a manager is best because they are thinking of your best interests and will likely filter the negative and respond to the positive in a beneficial way.

Make a plan of action

Before you go live, you need to formulate a plan of action. You need to have everything set up well in advance, test it out, and have everything ready well before you go live. Treat it like your premier on Conan.

Put on your best show because now more than ever, anybody could be watching, maybe even the people who will give you your big break so don’t make a bad impression.People will be scrutinizing your performance so the better you are live; the more engaging you are, the more successful you will be.

Remember that in a live situation, it’s impossible to be 100% prepared as there will always be unscripted moments; you’ll never know when someone will throw a live animal at you, run across the camera naked with his hair on fire, or even jump up and try to play alongside you, regardless of the fact that they sing like a retarded goose and have never mastered ‘Highway To Hell’ so you will have to think on your feet, but isn’t it more fun that way?

Stick To It

This also requires a great deal of stick-to-it-iveness. If you do have a bad show, don’t worry, it’s a new platform and nobody expects you to be the best at it the first time around.
In fact, if you fail miserably the first time, and do it again, people who saw it the first time may be watching to see if you fail again, but if you improve, they will notice it too and it will include your fans in your growth as performing artists. That will really make them feel included in your success and they will have their “I remember when” story if you get famous.

Make it A Regular Experience

In order to really take advantage of this tool, host a hangout on a regular basis, but don’t do it with every show; maybe once a month or so if you’re really attacking the scene. Keep in mind that you can host all sorts of events and are limited in this area only by your imagination. Whatever you do, make sure your producing content on a regular basis, whether its songs, videos, blogs, or just posting scribble drawings you drew on the napkins while on tour.

Have Patience

Finally, as in all aspect of art, you must have patience. Don’t expect to be an overnight sensation. The more you do this, the more notoriety you will get. It almost assured that unless your currently a big name, you won’t get a whole lot of traction until people see you hosting hangouts on a regular basis, but, if you make this a constant avenue of outreach you will benefit and fans will connect as long as you’re providing with them real value.

KCRW Web App Gives Independent Recording Artists An Opportunity To Receive Airplay on Public Radio

Soon indie bands will have a new place to upload their music and get exposure on public radio. NPR affiliate KCRW introduced a new platform on which to share music with an updated version of MALCOM, the stations internal filing system. Similar to Reverb Nation, the MALCOM platform, created by developers at KCRW will allow artists to create profiles, including a bio, photos and links to a bands website and social media pages. What make MALCOM unique is that submissions are sent directly to the station DJs, who will review and rate your music and get it on air, presumably if it meets their criteria. KCRW has been around for decades and has been responsible for helping artist like Beck, Coldplay, and Norah Jones get noticed by the mainstream.

The station has been very proud of their heritage and has built a reputation for giving unknown independent artists airplay in a market dominated by commercial radio. MALCOM is the latest attempt to bring even more unsigned independent artists to a wider audience.

With a wide variety of shows devoted to music, all styles can be represented and indie bands can now choose which DJ to submit to on the basis of genre and programming.

According to , Music Program Director Anne Litt, “Independent artists are more important than ever and we want to champion as many as we can, yet the volume of submissions we receive has grown
exponentially...We were asking ourselves how we can better serve these musicians and we came up with MALCOLM. It’s fast, easy and allows KCRW to do what we do best — support and share artist’s work

The system is still in its beta test phase so there are bugs to work out but this now provides artists to send in feedback and help the platform grow and develop into a truly astounding tool for emerging musicians. MALCOM will help facilitate the DJ’s ability to receive submissions electronically over a social platform and ultimately give listeners a chance to discover new and emerging artists before the mainstream gets to them.

Los Angeles readers can listen to KCRW on 89.9FM, or you can listen in at kcrw.com. Apps are available to download and are supported by Android and iPhone.

In todays world, there is no platform more inclusive or important than social media. Right now, the titans are Facebook, Twitter, and Linked In but I believe that will change as Google Plus gains popularity. As business owners, who is at the top hardly matters as long as we can recognize the trends and utilize the power of those at the top for our social media marketing purposes.

Establish Your Brand

your Brand must be unified in messaging. No matter where you are posting, you need to be consistent with the theme of your business. Your Google Plus page must by synonymous with your facebook page ( as Google Plus gains in popularity, this will be become increasingly important ) You must drive your message across the multiple social platforms and there must be no confusion as to who you are or what you stand for.

Redefine Your Keywords

Are your keywords brand specific? Unless you' really made a name for yourself, this could hurt you. Keep the terms to what people are searching for in your field. you need not put 's Roofing' in your key terms if no one knows who you are. instead focus on general, targeted, and local terms like 'roofing'˜'how to fix a leaking roof'and'southern california roofers' Diligent research is essential in considering what keywords to use

Develop Your Plan Of Action

Now that you have a specific set of Keywords and phrases, what will you do with them? How will you get your message to the masses? What will you do to initiate interaction? What will you offer your customers and how will you reward them for their loyalty?

One thing you can do is research your competition and see what is working for them, and what is not and experiment. After all, social media outreach is relatively cheap and easy to track.

Whatever you decide, you must have frequency in your posts, whether your offering advice, free gifts, or a discount , regular posting is essential. It shows that you are consistent and reliable. Bottom line, give your customers a reason to go to you and keep them involved.

Keep The Basics Of SEO In Mind

As long as you research the current trends in SEO marketing, you will do fine but i will mention one important change. It used to be that the more keywords you used the better but that led to keyword overload that bogged down and confused the search engines.

In response, Google created Panda and Penguin updates to punish overstuffing of keywords and links, knocking them down in the rankings so hard, many companies have all but disappeared from the search engines.

Its best to have a few, specific keywords and long tail keyword phrases that directly relate to your business and keep it simple. It makes it easier to read for your audience, and it ensures that your keywords are not fighting each other and hurting your overall ranking.

Now because of this new update by google, its very important that you produce and share content thru social platforms on a regular basis. There are two good reasons for this.

One method is to produce massive amounts of content with a limited limited keyword links. A good rule to follow is to keep targeted links under 20% , branded links around 40%, and general links around 40%.You also need to insure that the keywords are used in relation to your article in a natural way that is relevant and easy to read.

The second reason is that its just good marketing. Todays shoppers want good without any strings attached and if you are the one consistently providing this information to them, you gain their trust and loyalty.

Remember, the keys to success in social media marketing are authenticity, reliability, consistency, efficiency, and daily management of content to ensure proper feedback. This will help you track your effectivenessÂ&Acir

4 Awesome Apps For Guitar Players

Now that everything you can point a stick at seems to have a mobile app related to it, why would guitar players be left out of the mix? Well, truth be told, they never were but a good companion app for musicians is hard to find, other than chord charts and garage band, there’s not too much. Now, as a guitar player myself, I’m obsessed with finding the ultimate tone. I’ve gone through more guitars, pedals, and amplifiers than I have room to mention , and I’m still searching for the ultimate tone. Well I’ve looked around and found a few iOS apps that mimic specific modeled amps that are worthy sidekicks for any guitar aficionado so grab your guitar interface and let’s get to it.

Ampkit by Peavey
It is basically a modeling application It requires an individual iRig interface and has 12 amps, 20 channels and this one has 16 different pedal simulations to choose from. They sound pretty nice, but in my opinion it sounds very digital when distortion is used which is a turn off if you’re into the analog sound. This is ideal if you just want to jam without the hassle of actually hooking up your rig, or, if you’re on the road and you want to get some ideas down. http://peavey.com/products/recording/ampkitlink/

Stomp Shop by Digitech
This app simulates a variety of Digitech pedals so you can buy and download the pedals, both well-known and Digitech specialties onto your iPad or iPhone. It comes with a built in delay and gain pedal and you can then shop from a variety of effects, and each display gives you read out of the pedal, before you buy the pedal and gives you a 5 minute preview of the pedal to try it out before you purchase the pedal, for 99 bucks. You can then upload the pedal effects to an external iStomp pedal and play it through your rig. You do have to purchase the iStomp pedal separately however. http://digitech.com/en/softwares/stomp-shop

AmpliTube by IK Multimedia
AmpliTube is one of the better modeling applications on the market for iPhone. The pedal variations sound quite true to the original counterparts and its interface is quite intuitive. It lets you select from a variety of modeled amplifiers, racks, and amplifiers as well which make it one of the most worthy of these simulators. It comes with a variety of pack add ions and now, it comes with Slash’s presets and offers, for the first time, Marshal settings so if you want the tone of slash on your recording, this is a good app. In fact, Slash recorded his last album with this little app so that says something. From what I can tell, you can go through your laptop or computer and even run it through a speaker system. This is one versatile little app. It requires the additional iRig. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJNec1MEDzg

Rock Shop by Pocketlabworks
Yes, this is a bass centered app but this is my personal Favorite. First, it was designed in conjunction with Bassist David Ellefson form Megadeth who has a very savvy way with anticipating the need of the average musician. Not only was it designed with is specific presets for bass, but it allows a guitar player to use it as well, which for me makes it quite versatile right there but he also has integrated it with all of his social media sites. It interfaces with moist iOS music apps and uses the iRiffport, which connects to the dock and is superior to the iRig because it eliminates noise. You can plus it in to your computer or a speaker system. It has a variety of treble, gain, and boost effects, and you can pull in songs right off your iTunes playlist and play along with your favorite tracks.

It combines a mobile work studio, practice station with social media outlets YouTube and Facebook. For a truly unique and interactive experience you can share with your friends. Oh I nearly forgot to mention that it automatically plays in a variety of tunings so you don’t have to adjust the tunings on your instrument. See also its companion, the pocket amp, designed for guitars specifically although, it’s not quite as interactive it’s still pretty cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVgJABScCiY

In the end, you’ll have to decide for yourself which one you like best, but in any event, we are definitely entering into a new age of technology for musicians. Soon the age of totting around cumbersome amplifiers may become a thing of the past.
