...And A Happy Birthday To You! By Bill General

I had the pleasure of being invited to see The Fabulous Miss Wendy perform at The Viper Room on last Friday night. Since it was her birthday, after the kick ass set, she had some kick ass cake. But the time in between the opening of the curtain and “Happy Birthday, Miss Wendy…” was, to me, a relief from the boring, lackluster crap that’s been forced down our throats from the mainstream radio stations and record labels (that was a little ode to Barb Wire Dolls). Move over Britney, make way for Wendy.
Personally, I’m not really impressed with girl acts and their bubblegum pop mantra, and in fact, I downright loathe it. That being said, Miss Wendy adds a different flavor to the recipe of rock and roll. Yes, her style does have a “pop” feel to it, but it’s a “pop” I and other hard rock/punk enthusiasts can easily accept; and can she play the guitar. I think Jimi Hendrix would actually be impressed with her way of manipulating her axe to the point of no return.

Now I’m not about to throw names of famous guitarists, dead or alive, to compare her to (I think that’s a given), but let me add this….she can throw down with the best of them. The finale of her show was a 6 ½ minute cover of MC5’s “Kick Out The Jams,” and it was not to be forgotten to those in attendance. The way she slid across the catwalk with guitar in tow left us all captivated in some form or another. Along with Isis of the Barb Wire Dolls, Naomi Nektare of Kiss The Salt, Tammy Tomahawk of Cinderella Motel, and even Electra Barakos of Electra, Wendy is a warrior amongst the many female-fronted bands I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing and photographing over the past two years. Rock on!!
